How to Easily Build an Autumn Capsule Wardrobe on a Budget
I built my first capsule wardrobe out of sheer frustration, or you might even call it anger. I was so tired of feeling like I hated my clothes and spending 20 minutes every morning running around trying to pick an outfit.
Nothing felt like it went together, and I ended up wearing the same outfit over and over again, usually all black. It was a great excuse to buy a bunch of new clothes every weekend, but I needed a sustainable solution that wouldn’t cost me hundreds of pounds.
A capsule wardrobe, consisting of a small, deliberately chosen set of pieces that all work with each other, saved me.
Do Capsule Wardrobes Actually Work?
Honestly, yes, even though you probably won’t believe me until you try it. It works because everything in your wardrobe becomes intentional and matches with each other.
Capsule wardrobes work because all of your clothes go together, and you only have pieces in your wardrobe that suit the current season.
You end up having fewer decisions to make, and you stop overthinking your outfits.
Key Capsule Wardrobe Pieces
The aim of building your capsule wardrobe is to always utilise pieces you already own first, and then make a few strategic purchases. Here are the key pieces you can consider:
1. A Range of Layering Tops
I feel like in autumn, tops and accessories are the best pieces for making your outfit interesting. Start by including long and short-sleeve layering tops in a small range of colours and necklines. The top 2026 autumnal colours you’ll find in the shops right now are deep purple, olive green and brown. When choosing necklines, I’d go for boat neck, scoop or V-neck as they suit the widest range of body shapes.
Trend-wise, henley and babydoll tops are having a moment right now, especially with a lace cami peeking out underneath, and quarter-length sleeves are absolutely everywhere this season. Both are worth purchasing if you want something current that will remain timeless.
My favourite layering tops at the moment are the Zara Contrast Jacket with Lace Top, the H&M Ribbed Boat Neck Top, the ASOS DESIGN Ribbed Deep Scoop Neck Long Sleeve, and the H&M V-Neck Viscose Top.
2. Two Cardigans
If you love cardigans, you’ll relate to wanting to buy every single one you see that is actually soft and not itchy. In a capsule wardrobe, though, you have to think about which cardigans will go with most of your outfits.
I recommend choosing one lighter-coloured and one darker-coloured cardigan. A thick black cardigan is a staple, and a lighter cardigan in a different style or pattern will add variety to your outfits. Having these means you can combine them with your layering tops, but easily take them off when it randomly gets hotter.
Including one light and one dark cardigan allows you to make all of your outfits warmer without much thought.
Some super soft cardigans you can shop right now are the Primark Ribbed Round Neck Cardigan, the Primark Scene Knitted Button Wrap Cardigan, the Stradivarius Soft-Touch Button-Up Knit Cardigan, and the ASOS DESIGN Edge-to-Edge Rib Cardigan.
3. Flared or Wide-Leg Trousers
You need a good pair of trousers. One that is versatile enough that you can wear it to uni, work and out with your friends. I’ve found that either a flared or wide-leg style suits most people, and it's best to keep these in neutral tones such as black, navy, brown and grey.
Choose the trousers you feel will match with most of your tops and cardigans.
Some of the most versatile trousers on the market right now are the Bershka Bengaline Flared Trousers, the H&M Bootcut Tailored Trousers, the Stradivarius Wide-Leg Trousers, and the M&S Woven Straight Leg Trousers with Stretch.
4. Light & Dark Wash Jeans
Jeans add a completely different vibe to your outfit than trousers do. You can wear them to both dress up and down an outfit, depending on your accessories, such as a heeled boot versus trainers.
Dark wash jeans scream autumn, but I also like adding a lighter pair because autumnal outfits don’t always have to be dark.
To get the most out of including two pairs of jeans, choose different styles for each. For example, a low-waisted light wash flared pair and a mid-rise dark wash straight-leg pair.
Making your outfits look different with similar pieces is all about the silhouettes you create, and even the slightest variation makes a difference.
My most comfortable jean recommendations are the Pull & Bear Low-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans, the River Island Black Mid-Rise Split Coated Boot-Leg Jeans, the River Island Blue High-Waisted Relaxed Straight Jeans, and the Hollister Ultra Low-Rise Flare Jeans.
5. A Trench Coat
A trench coat is close to non-negotiable. Shorter lengths are trending right now, whereas a longer trench is a timeless choice and will keep you warmer throughout autumn.
They’re the perfect choice for a coat because the weather can be so unpredictable, feeling quite warm and humid, and then windy and rainy a second later. A trench will keep you warm and dry without overheating.
A trench coat is a truly timeless piece to add to your capsule wardrobe that will keep you warm and elevate any outfit.
If you think of a classic trench, you’re probably picturing a beige one, but this year, we’re seeing lots of chocolate brown versions that can really elevate your outfits. Choose whichever colour you feel suits your features most.
A couple of budget-friendly options include the Primark Essential Trench Coat, the H&M Knee-Length Twill Trench Coat, the Bershka Funnel-Neck Trench Coat, and the Stradivarius Long Basic Trench Coat.
