The Skincare Ingredients Behind the Glow
Trying to find skincare that actually works for your skin type can be difficult in a market that is overflowing with products, all telling you that they are the key to unlocking clear skin. However, when deciding which products are best for you, it’s the words that are written on the back of the packaging that you should pay attention to, not the ones in the marketing campaign. Finding out which ingredients are best for your skin can be overwhelming, which is why I’m going to break it down for you here.
Dry/Dehydrated Skin
If you find that most days you’re having to apply some extra moisturiser or your skin gets very dry after cleansing, you likely have dry skin. Some of the best ingredients for your dry or dehydrated skin are the ones that help your skin to retain moisture and maintain that hydration.
One great ingredient for this is Hyaluronic acid as it not only holds water within the skin, but also attracts water and improves elasticity, without it feeling too heavy on your skin.
Hyaluronic Acid is a great skincare ingredient that locks in moisture.
Another amazing skincare ingredient that will help to hydrate your skin is Glycerin. This ingredient is great for the appearance of hydrated skin as it holds hydration at the surface layers of the skin and is arguably one of the best ingredients for long-term hydration.
Oily Skin
When you find your skin getting glowy after applying endless amounts of powder, it may be that you need some skincare that helps support your oily skin. A good skincare product for oily skin will exfoliate your skin and cleans out your pores.
Salicylic acid is great for oily skin due to its exfoliating properties that helps to bring out sebum and dirt from your pores. Removing the dirt from your pores can help to reduce the amount of oil that your glands produce.
An alternative ingredient to help address oily skin is Niacinamide. This is an important ingredient to look out for in your skincare if you have oily skin as it helps to regulate the rate at which your pores produce oil. Therefore, it is beneficial for reducing the appearance of oily skin long term. As well as this, it can also minimise the appearance of pores, which is often a struggle that people face if their skin type is classified as oily.
Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide are both great options for people that struggle with oily skin.
Acne/Break Out Prone Skin
Struggling with acne-prone skin can be very frustrating as it can be hard to find products that don’t break you out. One of the best ways that I have found to best predict if a skincare product is going to break me out is by using the Personal Day Ingredients Checker, which will identify if your products have any acne-triggering ingredients (this also works for your makeup products too!!).
It can be difficult to find skincare products that do not trigger acne-prone skin.
However, you don’t just want to work to cut out acne triggering ingredients, but also to build a routine that supports your skin and prevents and treats breakouts. Here are some ingredients that you should look out for.
Salicylic acid. It simultaneously helps with oily and acne-prone skin by reducing the production of black and whiteheads by extracting sebum. It also has a very anti-inflammatory effect, to help calm your skin down.
Violet willow extract. This ingredient is known for its anti-blemish effect as well as its exfoliating factors. It can also help to reduce inflammation!
Redness
For people that suffer from redness on their skin or hyperpigmentation, they may question whether their skincare products will really help to improve this for them. Here are some suggestions that can help support the reduced look of skin redness.
Mugwort is an ingredient that has calming antioxidant properties that can reduce irritation and redness, making your complexion much smoother and calmer. Green tea (both in your skincare products and in beverage form) has very similar properties and can help to protect from environmental stressors.
Green tea is a great anti-inflammatory for your skin - however you choose to consume it!
Aging Skin
A skin concern that has the most overwhelming array of products to choose from is arguably anti-aging skincare. Most of these products will tell you that they can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and just make the skin appear more youthful in general. The way to know if these products are really going to be beneficial to you is by seeing if they have any of the following ingredients.
Oxybenzonen is an ingredient that is often used in suncream. This helps to prevent aging through sun damage, which is known to increase the appearance of aging skin.
Aside from suncare, Peptides is an ingredient that will often be found in helpful anti-aging products. This ingredient builds blocks of proteins which are needed to build new collagen. As a result of the increased amount of collagen in your skin, the appearance will become much more youthful and elastic.
Using the correct anti-aging skincare can help you achieve more youthful looking skin.
Finding the right skincare products for you can sometimes be overwhelming when you don’t know which products are actually going to benefit you. Hopefully, this guide to skincare ingredients will help you navigate which products will best support your skin.
